Naphthalan treatment - balneotherapeutic method, when naftalan oil or preparations made of it are used for therapeutic purposes. The therapeutic effect of naphthalan oil is due to the presence of naphthenic hydrocarbons in it, which has stimulating, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and vasodilating properties, so that naphthalan oil is actively used in the treatment of more than 70 types of diseases.

In health resorts of Belarus naphthalan treatment is mainly prescribed as lubrication with heating by a special lamp (infrared radiation is used to enhance the effect) and baths.

Naphthalane lubrication are appointed in the form of general or local procedures, during which a pre-heated naphthalan is applied to a specific area of the skin with a thin layer using a flat brush. With local lubrication, naftalan is applied to a specific area of the body, depending on the disease. So, with diseases of the joints - the area of the affected joints, with diseases of the spine - the area of the spine, etc. After the application of naphthalene, the lubricated area is covered with a bikini blanket or subjected to a light-thermal action.

Naftalan baths can be general, sedentary and chamber. The usual temperature of this bath is 37 - 38 ° C. During the procedure, oil penetrates into the blood through the pores and then flows back with sweat secretions, removing harmful substances from the body.

To obtain the greatest therapeutic effect from naphthalan treatment in health resorts of Belarus it is necessary to take a course of at least 8 procedures under the supervision of experienced doctors. Based on the patient's condition, you can use procedure every other day. In some cases after 1-3 procedures there is an exacerbation of the disease, but after 4-6 applications the therapeutic effect begins to manifest itself.

Naphthalan treatment is used for a large number of various diseases: diseases of the musculoskeletal system (arthritis, arthrosis, periarthrosis, tendovaginitis, myositis, consequences of injuries), cardiovascular system (thrombophlebitis, endarteritis), female genital area (polycystosis, endometriosis, chronic inflammations); skin (eczema, red lichen, psoriasis, burns), peripheral nervous system (radiculitis, neuritis), etc.

Naphthalan treatment is contraindicated in inflammatory processes, frequent bleeding, malignant tumors, hyperthermia, thyrotoxicosis and neoplasia.
